“Halftime in America”

Does anyone else agree that having Clint Eastwood narrate a commercial instantly makes it 100x better?  Morgan Freeman and James Earl Jones have that same effect.

Chrysler shelled out millions for the Super Bowl ad, which many said was a thinly veiled political piece.  It featured the “Dirty Harry” star giving a serious pep talk to America:

“It’s halftime. Both teams are in their locker rooms discussing what they can do to win this game in the second half,” Eastwood begins. “It’s halftime in America, too. People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re all wondering what they’re gonna do to make a comeback.”

The message is coming from highly regarded actor and filmmaker, Eastwood, which is a change from last year’s ad featuring Eminem.

We wonder if Chrysler meant to be so controversial with this commercial. Maybe they should’ve gone for laughs like Doritos did with their catapulting baby ad.

Madonna promises “Greatest Show on Earth”

Madonna told Jay Leno a few days ago that preparing for her performance at the Super Bowl is “the most nerve-racking thing I’ve ever done.”  It seems hard to imagine that somebody like Madonna can be nervous, but it’s refreshing to hear that even someone so accomplished can appreciate this opportunity.  She claims that her performance will be dedicated to her father.

“This is a Midwesterner girl’s dream to be performing at the Super Bowl halftime show,” said Madonna, who was born in Bay City, Michigan.

Local Los Angeles radio stations have vowed to play her new single “Give Me All Your Luvin” every hour on the hour, until she performs at the Super Bowl on Sunday.  That’s some serious dedication.  If you haven’t heard it before, here is the music video that features M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj.  It’s available now on iTunes.

It is confirmed that she will be singing three old songs along with her new track, which are rumored to be “Vogue,” “Ray of Light,” and “Music.”  LMFAO and M.I.A. are supposedly going to be joining the Queen of Pop during the 12-minute performance.

Madonna won’t say which team she is rooting for, but the little salsa dance she did at a recent press conference, gives us a hint.  The salsa is the preferred touchdown dance for Victor Cruz, wide receiver of the Giants.

How P3R Celebrates Groundhog Day

It’s February 2nd, day of the most random “holiday,” which consists of plucking out a furry creature named Phil from his burrow.  This tradition was brought to Pennsylvania by German immigrants and has now made Punxsutawney Phil into a celebrity animal psychic.

Phil’s supporters insist that he’s preternaturally accurate at predicting the weather, but stats don’t quite add up.  This has been his 126th time, and his record of being correct is somewhere south of 40%.  Whatever his success rate may be, we think he is adorable.

We have listed two ways P3R plans to celebrate this fun day:

1. Drink a sweet Vermouth with a twist.  Grab an old fashioned cocktail glass (we suggest these cool Waterford ones) and pour sweet vermouth over ice.  Stir and twist lemon over the glass and enjoy! And since Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter, you might want to make that two!

2. Watch the movie, of course!  Groundhog Day, a comedy from 1993 starring Bill Murray, is such a classic.  It is a story about a weatherman who finds himself living the same day over and over again.  Below is a clip:

Do you believe Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of 6 more weeks of winter is correct?  How do you plan to make this day fun?

Do you “Like” Facebook’s IPO?

Today Facebook filed to go public in order to raise $5 Billion in initial funding.  This capital will allow the company to invest more in its products (FarmVille, anyone?) and raise its revenue streams.  Many fans of the social networking site are in a frenzy over this, including those in the financial world.

“Pandemonium is what I expect in terms of demand for this stock,” says Scott Sweet, senior managing partner at IPO Boutique, an advisory firm. “I don’t think Wall Street would want to anger Facebook users.”

But before you invest your hard earned cash, be aware of the history of IPOs.  Just recently, Groupon made headlines when they announced their entrance into the IPO world.  Unfortunately for owner, the attention ended up disappointing.  The company  had to amend their regulatory filing multiple times, making investors “Pass on this deal.”

Time will tell if Facebook succeeds as Google did, or if they’ll follow in Groupon’s dismal footsteps.

P3R wants to know, would you invest?

Rest in Peace, Love, & Soul

Don Cornelius, creator of ‘Soul Train’ is now deceased at age 75.  His hit show was one of the longest-running syndicated programs in TV history.  ‘Soul Train’ started getting nationally broadcasted in 1971, giving the show a 35 year run.

‘Soul Train’ featured young dancers and was the pioneer of music and dance programs like MTV and VH1.  Every Saturday morning, the show influenced African American culture, including hair styles, dance moves, and wardrobe choices.

There was outpouring support and admiration from major artists such as Young Jeezy, MC Hammer, Ice Cube, Wyclef Jean, Russell Simmons, and others.

For those that were too young to remember, or if you just want to relive the classic “Soul Train Line,” watch the clip below!

Christina Aguilera is Back “At Last”

Etta James (1938-2012)

Celebrities paid tribute to Etta James at her funeral on Saturday.  Family and friends remembered the talented R&B singer at a private service, which included performances by Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder.  The Rev. Al Sharpton gave the eulogy which was opened by a statement from President Barack Obama.

“Etta will be remembered for her legendary voice and her contributions to our nation’s musical heritage,” the president’s statement read.

Obama famously danced to Beyonce’s version of Etta’s popular song “At Last” during his inaugural ball in 2008.

James died on January 20 at age 73 from leukemia, and other battles.  She overcame many hardships during her lifetime, including drug addiction and a difficult early home life.

Etta’s career spanned decades as she has earned four Grammys and has been an inspiration to millions.  Christina Aguilera’s tribute to her idol is in the clip below.

The “Citysumers” Trend

The future of the consumer scape revolves around “citysumers”.  You might be wondering what exactly a “citysumer” is.  Well, you probably are one!   Driven by the global urbanization of millions, this category of people is described as sophisticated urbanites, who are demanding more and more from consumer products.

In order to appease these types of consumers, brands have to show that they care.  “Citysumers” want to feel as if the brand understands what they need in their lifestyle.

Serving these CITYSUMERS obviously requires brands to tailor products and campaigns to savvy urban audiences: for anything from practical reasons (offering appropriate shapes, sizes and features of urban goods and services) to showing the brand ‘gets’ it (addressing busy and diverse lifestyles) to contributing to the quest for social and environmental sustainability.” (trendwatching.com)

The trend of 2012 is that these citysumers are growing by the MILLIONS, which means only one thing for businesses: opportunity.  The number of lower-income urbanites is unprecedented and consumer good companies can profit tremendously in markets worldwide.

The lifestyle of urban Chinese consumers has changed from a “survive” mentality to an “enjoy life” one, with 54% now pursuing a more fun lifestyle. (Source: GfK Roper, 2010.)

Businesses need to remember that just because citysumers have a lower income, it does not mean they will sacrifice aesthetics for a lower price point.  Successful products will be durable, convenient and will cater to those with a smaller living space.

Which products do you see in the market that are following this global urbanite trend?
